MOUNT EVELYN SCOUTS

The Group

1st Mount Evelyn Scout Group will be celebrating their 90th birthday in 2018.  It is the largest group in the Yarra Ranges District and one of the most vibrant and active in the Mt Dandenong Region.

 

We have active Joey, Cub, Scout and Venturer sections run and supported by a committed team of parents and volunteers.  These volunteers provide a stimulating program that balances fun and friendships with subtle ongoing learning through the badge system.

 

1st Mount Evelyn Scout Group offers the best Scouting available and this is supported by regular acknowledgement from the Scout Association by way of various recognitions and awards including the “Quality Scouting Award”.

 

Our Leaders

 

Our group is run by a committed group of volunteers; parents, Rovers, or friends of Scouting. They undergo training plus attend monthly meetings to ensure that they provide the best learning outcomes for all our youth members.

A Police check and Working with Children Check are required for all our leaders and helpers.

 

Scouts Australia is a Registered Training Provider and can provide training for Certificates and the Diploma in Leadership. We cover all the costs of your uniform and training.

 

 

Our Committee

Every Scout Group forms a parent committee, known as a Group Committee, to assist the Group Leader provide the resources needed by the Section Leaders to run effective and safe programs.  It does not have any role in the training of youth members.

 

Members of the Group Committee are volunteers appointed by the Group Leader to serve for twelve months, although they are eligible for re-appointment. Members of the Group Committee are principally drawn from parents of youth members, and may also include former Scouts or others interested in the Group. The Group Leader is the only leader on the Group Committee.  The Group Committee’s main office bearers are: a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. An independent Auditor is also required to audit the books annually. Our Group Committee also has the positions of a hall hire, Maintenance, fundraising coordinator, website and General Committee positions.

 

The Group Committee usually meets once a month and is required to hold an Annual General Meeting each year to adopt the annual report and annual accounts.  The AGM is always held in conjunction with the Annual Recognition and Awards Presentation (ARAP).

 

The functions of the Group Committee include the following:

  • Ensure the Group has adequate funding to enable it to provide high quality programs to the members at an acceptable cost

  • Ensure proper records are kept and all funds are accounted for

  • Arrange and provide suitable accommodation for the Group

  • Provide and maintain equipment required by the Sections of the Group, in liaison with the Group Council, through the Group Leader

  • Assist the Group Leader to recruit, retain and support Leaders for all Sections of the Group

  • Recommend the appointment of a Group Leader to the District Commissioner

  • Ensure that all persons in direct contact with the youth members of the Group are of exemplary character and are fit and proper persons to carry out their role of leading young people

  • Assist the Group Leader with the implementation of the Group plan and receive reports on progress

  • Establish and maintain good relationships with other community organisations and community leaders generally

  • Convene an Annual General Meeting at which the audited financial accounts of the Group and an annual report presented

 

Committee Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month (except in January).

Parents

At 1st Mount Evelyn we are a community. Parents are encourages to become active members in that community. We are all volunteers and your added support makes Scouting better for your children.  It’s a great way to be involved with your children and to make some lifelong friends.

 

Parents can become involved in many ways including the following:

  • Becoming a Leader, Assistant Leader or Parent Helper in a section

  • Joining the Group Support Committee

  • Assisting with fundraising

  • Volunteer trade skills to help with maintenance and repairs

  • Donating items for raffles, prizes, etc

  • Provide assistance to a section for badges based on an area of knowledge or expertise

  • Assist with camp set up and/or pack up

  • Volunteer as a camp cook

  • Assist with transporting gear for camps

  • Help at Working Bees
